Why Location Matters More Than Resort Category at Walt Disney World

Laura Greco, Fairytale Journeys Travel, at Disney's Boardwalk Inn

When most families start researching Walt Disney World resorts, they usually focus on one thing first: category.

Should they choose a Value Resort, a Moderate Resort, or a Deluxe Resort?

While those categories certainly matter, there is something I often find even more important when helping clients choose where to stay: Location.

The reality is that the best Disney resort is not always the most expensive one. It is the resort that fits the way your family plans to vacation.

Not All Disney Transportation Is Created Equal

Disney's transportation system is one of the biggest benefits of staying on property, but every resort connects to the parks differently.

Some resorts offer:

  • Walking access to a park

  • Monorail transportation

  • Skyliner transportation

  • Boat transportation

  • Bus transportation only

These transportation options can have a huge impact on your overall vacation experience. A family planning multiple EPCOT and Hollywood Studios days may love the convenience of a Skyliner resort. Another family focused on Magic Kingdom might find tremendous value in staying near the monorail.

Think About How You Vacation

One of the questions I ask clients is simple:

"What park do you think you'll spend the most time in?"

The answer often tells me more than their budget does.

For example:

  • A family with young children planning several Magic Kingdom days may benefit from staying closer to Magic Kingdom.

  • A couple planning a food-focused vacation with lots of EPCOT time may prioritize Skyliner or Crescent Lake area resorts.

  • A family taking midday breaks may place a higher value on convenient transportation than a family that stays in the parks from open to close.

Why I Don't Automatically Recommend Deluxe Resorts

Many travelers assume Deluxe Resorts are always the best choice.

Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are not.

I've helped families choose Value Resorts because they planned to spend most of their time in the parks. I've helped families choose Moderates because they wanted a quieter atmosphere and larger grounds. I've also helped families choose Deluxe Resorts because the location and convenience justified the additional investment.

The answer is different for every family.

My Favorite Resort Conversations

One of my favorite parts of planning Walt Disney World vacations is helping families narrow down their resort choices. There is no perfect resort.

There is only the right resort for your vacation style. The goal is not simply finding a room. The goal is finding the resort that makes your entire trip easier, more enjoyable, and more memorable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Disney Resort location for first-time visitors?

It depends on which parks you plan to visit most often. Many first-time visitors enjoy Skyliner resorts because of the convenient access to both EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Is transportation really that important at Walt Disney World?

For many families, yes. Transportation can impact how much time you spend traveling between parks, resorts, and dining reservations throughout your vacation.

Are Disney Deluxe Resorts worth the extra money?

Sometimes. Deluxe Resorts offer premium locations and amenities, but they are not automatically the best choice for every family.

How do I choose the right Disney Resort?

The best choice depends on your budget, travel style, transportation preferences, and vacation priorities. Working with a Disney travel specialist can help narrow down the options and simplify the decision.
